Years ago when sets were carved, and painted, a great deal of thought was put into their designs, but today much of the subtle symbolism goes unnoticed. This website, Mahjong Treasures allows people to see photographs of vintage Mahjong tiles, boxes and game accessories, and to develop a new appreciation for the art. I am undertaking a new project that you can read about by clicking History Project at the top of the page. There is exciting mahjong news at the bottom of this welcome page. China Institute sponsored me to give a talk about the Chinese Tradition of Mahjong, and at the end Melissa Martens Yaverbaum, curator of Project Mah Jongg, and I chatted about the game.
